Over the years I have realised that my involvement with the visual representation is not linear but has travelled through the premises of conceptual art to expressionistic to comic art to intuitive art. I have always set grounds and horizons to work towards and once attained, it shifts to another destination.
From last two years, I have been involved in various experimental and temperamental projects. I believe that my work is still in the process to find its core and below I will try to recollect all those areas which are governing.
Some of the key points for my current series of work:
1) I present ‘histories’ in my work. ‘History’ not in the context of bibliography to find subjects to paint but in the context of information. I find it very interesting, that how information related to an object or an incident can change our position of perceiving the same and how we tactically use its information to look at things and happenings in our surroundings. My work is about working with this kind of established mind set to find yet another meaning out of it.
2) My work contains humour, satire and friction. I use them to narrate these historicities.
3) I believe in the notion of Artist being able to create ‘Images’. I am extremely convinced that I can’t repeat or work with the same imagery again and again. Image making for me is the most enjoyable part and is the core of my work. I believe in the ability as an Artist to convert information and thoughts into visuals.
4) My work is basically figurative and its connotations are dependent on the action, gesture and placement within its surroundings.
5) Manner or style of rendering an image is yet another area in my work. From a conceptual point of view I see that the manner of painting an image talks about how and where we have been seeing those visuals. So, I use different styles of rendering an image to talk about its context and not limiting myself to any set style or categorization.
My art has developed through day to day practise in my studio. I approach the work, without any strong preoccupation. It often starts with a scratch or due to some material but I paint with the immediate need to look for other representational possibilities in a 2-dimensional format. Finding ways for placement and structuring a 2-d space is one prime reason to work as a painter.
Subtle and unrecognizable changes with the formal elements of 2-d sphere make it possible for me and my ideas for work are also co-related to it. It derives from the process of drawing. ‘Drawing’ in a literal sense and also in the sense ‘to draw’, meaning “to pull out’’, subjects, meanings and possibilities from the surface itself.
Starting from my fisrt solo show “Adventitious L’I’nes” in 2008 till now, I have attempted to push all above mentioned to its next level.
